An exploration of abstract expressionism in contemporary society.
Nokuphila Gwala is a Durban-based artist who articulates her creative concepts through mixed media and installation. Gwala creates work that reflects on and explores the human body in abstraction. She uses everyday materials to create abstract representations of the inner body at a cellular level. This serves as a means to find abstract visual equivalents for our common humanity. Simultaneously, she explores her own identity as a black South African woman by use of abstract motifs and methods. She creates metaphors for societal divisions along the lines of race, gender, religion and other external attributes, whilst weaving minor and major aspects of identity into her work.
