Traditional art-making meets technological advancement.
Leonardo Sitoe is a contemporary visual artist based in Johannesburg, specialising in painting, drawing, and new media. He is currently studying a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Johannesburg. Born in the 2000s, Leonardo has grown alongside the rise of the Information Age, and finds himself in the strange intersection of the physical and digital worlds. He uses his practice to explore the complex relationship between humans, pop culture, and technology. He likens his attraction to the digital and algorithmic worlds to that of a moth to a flame. Using wood, lights, and burning as his medium, he explores the duality of the natural and superficial by linking traditional and new-age art-making methods: burning and carving, while incorporating modern-day elements like electricity.
