My artistic style is long-form documentary capturing the mood and energy of each place I document.
My work is social documentary in nature, and focuses on long-form storytelling exploring complex issues within the spaces I am documenting. I'm drawn to the fisheries space and have been working along the coast for a number of years as a researcher in the field. This particular fisheries project is a long-form project exploring the socio-economics of the Snoek value chain, and other fishing activities performed by fishers, some of whom are undocumented and excluded from accounting.
I aim to emphasise the vast contribution of small-scale fishers to local communities, legitimising their opposition to mining and offshore prospecting applications under Operation Phakisa. I immerse myself in each place I document, approaching these spaces with an eagerness to understand their social context and learn more about their people. My chosen medium is film photography because of the slower, more considerate process it facilitates, as well as the aesthetic outcome it achieves.
